‘Thompson’s Toughness, His Will. It’s Huge’: Tyronn Lue On Tristan Thompson’s Series-Opening Performance NBA Playoffs

Despite a 10-day lay-off, the Cleveland Cavaliers showed no rust and put up a masterful performance in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals on the road against the Boston Celtics. Cleveland’s front line of LeBron James (38 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists) and Kevin Love (32 points, 12 rebounds, 6-of-9 on 3’s) were just too much for Boston to handle.

After the game, James laid down the keys behind how and why the team cruised to a blowout victory:

The first word LeBron used was “energy”. Cavaliers’ head coach Tyronn Lue credited that to the team’s starting center – Tristan Thompson. The Cleveland center had 20 points and nine rebounds, which included six offensive boards to lead the Cavs. “His toughness. His will. His physicality is huge for us,” Lue said in his post-game interview.

This wasn’t just the Cavaliers talking. Celtics’ Avery Bradley pretty much repeated what James and Lue mentioned. Speaking on Thompson’s impact on the offensive glass, Bradley said, “That’s what he [Tristan] brings to that team, and in the Playoffs you’re supposed to try to take away what guys do.”
